When it comes to prom, the first thought that comes to mind is the dresses and tuxedos. Girls thinking months ahead about that perfect dress, guys trying to find a matching tuxedo and corsage, and that’s before all the effort of makeup and hair.
But it’s different for Tim Jordan ‘16 and Tori Inman ‘15. Attending the 2014 prom, Jordan and Inman wore different attire than was expected — Jordan sporting a red dress from a local store called Envy and Inman wearing a tuxedo.
When considering attending prom, Jordan and Inman played with the idea on Inman wearing a tuxedo instead of a dress because she found more comfort in a tuxedo.
“I wore a dress on gender-bender day during spirit week and I loved how good I looked in it so wearing a dress to prom made sense” said Jordan.
After looking around for a dress, he found a local store named Envy and Jordan found the perfect dress, a flowing crimson design.
“I got my tux at Salvation Army,” stated Inman. The final purchase was made after Inman looked around at other tuxedo shops and got a good idea of the perfect tux for her.
“We got the dress and tuxedo idea approved by Mrs. Wingle and Dr. Wright before prom,” said Inman and Jordan, referring to the class adviser and principal.
“I didn’t go to prom but I feel that Tim and Tori’s head were in the right place, there’s nothing wrong with it and if it’s not you then it’s not your problem,” said Elizabeth Miller ‘16
Of course this raised some eyebrows but there was no problem, said Jordan. Even though some students went as far to threaten him.
“The day before I was warned by someone that she and her friends were planning to bring razor blades to the dance to slash my dress,” said Jordan. “I wasn’t worried; we just had to be careful, but we didn’t let it ruin our night.”
Inman confirmed the rumor but went to the dance and had fun at prom regardless of the threat.
“I just shrugged it off but made sure to be careful,” mentioned Inman.
“I heard the rumors about the dress cutting. I knew if they spread those rumors they have more issues than a boy wearing a dress,” said Paige Siver ‘16.
“He’s my best friend. I would never let anything happen to him, regardless of his choices,” she said, referring to Jordan.
Although there was a threat from a disapproving group of students, the prom was fun and the worst Inman and Jordan received was a few side-glances and eyebrow raises.
“I saw Tim and he looked great,” said English teacher Andrea Villareal.
“They looked like they were having fun,” said Sydney Landon ‘15.
