The Interact Club at Plainwell will be doing a bottled water drive now through Feb. 5 for families in Flint to get clean water while their water contamination crisis is being resolved.
They will be teaming up with the Red Cross Club to bring in cases and gallons of water for the Flint community.
“It feels great to help out people in times of crisis” said Sydney Rehr’ 17.
Rehr, President of the Interact Club, will be delivering the water to flint with Dr. Wright and the help of the other members of the Interact Club.
“We might take a semi truck to deliver the water depending on how much we get” said Rehr. Water will be counted during 5th hour classes. In addition, community members can drop off water to the high school office.
The city of Flint decided to shut off treated water from Detroit in order to save 5 million dollars in two years and switch over to a newly renovated water treatment plant.
The new water plant would be pumping water from the Flint river and treating it for use.
Residents complained about the water being smelly and murky.
City officials said that the water was safe to drink and that it was a waste to buy bottled water.
Tests revealed elevated levels of chemical compounds in the water supply that can lead to liver or kidney issues. Lead has been leaching in the tap water from the pipes.
The people of Flint are now suffering from further exposure to unsafe elements and disease due to the breakdown and corrosion of the city’s water pipes.
Residents who could afford bottled water switched to bottled water. Most residents can’t.
