As a result of the recent car accident, principal Jeremy Wright, yearbook teacher Jane Kostanko, television production teacher Keven Badalamente, and newspaper production teacher Marilyn Hess came together to discuss how to prevent similar incidences in the future.
An updated permission slip to leave campus for media classes was created. This permission slip goes more in depth about expectations than the prior slip.
As opposed to the one passenger limit, the rule now states that there must not be more students in the vehicle than the driver’s license permits, and/or a maximum of four per vehicle.
Although it was implied prior to the accident, the permission slip now states that students must only travel to the destinations they say they are going to.
“The changes are mostly about accountability: students need to be where they said they would be, doing what they said they would be doing, and teachers need to know where those kids are and with whom,” said Kostanko.
Also implied before, the rules now include an agreement to wear a seat belt, refrain from distracted driving, and follow all traffic laws.
In addition, teachers and administration are able to deny a student’s request to leave campus if the weather makes driving unsafe on any particular day.
“Hopefully, if everyone is following the rules, the changes in what gets done will be unnoticeable,” said Kostanko.
