For as long as anyone here can remember the responsibility of planning prom each year has fallen onto the junior class and their class advisers. And almost every year there is a new “threat” by the senior class to make it the best prom ever because of course it’s their senior prom.
After many years this cycle is being broken. No longer will the responsibility fall onto the juniors to plan prom. Next year the event will be planned by the Event Planning class, that will be offered for the first time next school year.
“The difficulty of getting teachers to step up and be class advisers along with difficulty in being able to have students stay after school for meetings is how this idea blossomed. It was an idea that Dr. Wright, Ms. Burley, and I helped make a reality,” explained Sarah Boven, who will be teaching the class.
Teachers and students both know that planning prom is no small task. It is an event that takes months and months of planning. This class will allow more students who want to be involved, the opportunity to do so.
“I think it will be beneficial because I think more people will be planning it who enjoy planning it, rather than it falling on people who may not always care,” says Sara White ‘17, who is planning on taking the class.
“I think that it was a good opportunity for juniors, but I think that it will be good to get the insight from different grades because it isn’t just junior prom. Also the participation may not have always been great when it relied on after school meetings, so maybe this change will get more participants,” said Maya Scott ‘16, who helped plan prom last year.
Sure the group of people who are planning prom may be changing but one thing that isn’t changing is that students are still planning it, with the help of a teacher of course.
“The organization will still depend on the students,” says Boven.
This class is also a way for students interested in event planning as a future career to get an early look as to what it will be like.
“I like planning events and I want to go into something like it in college, so I am very excited to learn more about it now,” explains White.
For those planning on taking the class the intent is to learn about event planning, work hard, but have fun doing so, and having fun is always a must when planning such an anticipated event.
