Plainwell’s varsity soccer program has had a decent overall season so far, with a record of 8-8. Plainwell’s soccer program has always been strong, but this year feels different to players and fans; Plainwell seems to have a chance at winning state. Plainwell has just come off a strong win, beating Gull Lake, the defending state champs; A massive win and momentum starter for the PHS team.
John Amaezechi (‘25) has played a big role on the team so far this year, playing left back on the field. Amaezechi has a good feeling about the future of this team, saying, “Out of conference we have a positive record, playing against D1 schools and defending state champs,” His statement shows the difficulty and strength of the schedule. Being a Division Two school, and playing against Division One state champs is very impressive. With all of the success, Amaezechi speaks highly of another important player on the team, Nolan Edgell (‘25).
Another impactful player on the Plainwell varsity team is Luke Johnson (‘24). Johnson has also played a very big role for this team playing at the midfield. Johnson has a positive attitude on how the season is going so far and is excited for what’s yet to come. Johnson said, “We have been playing some tough teams, so are record isn’t the greatest, but the season has been going pretty well,” What surprised him the most this season so far was the fact that they beat the defending state champs, as his fellow teammates have previously mentioned. With all of this success, Johnson also gave credit to a very impactful player on the team, Andrew Eldred (‘24), who has been playing the goalkeeper position.
One final important player on the varsity team has been Ryan Quertermus (‘25). Quertermus has been playing soccer for his whole life and is now an upperclassman on varsity who primarily plays defense for the team. Quertermus says, ¨The team started off pretty slow, but lately, they have been picking it back up,” He also agrees with Johnson that beating Gull Lake was a massive win for them and has helped gain a lot of momentum for this team. Quertermus has a lot of confidence in the season, saying, ¨We don’t really need to improve on anything, we just have to keep doing what we´re doing and we´ll be good,¨ Quertermus thinks that Connor Wilson (‘24) has been a big part of this team’s success with his leadership and playmaking.
With this information, it seems that Plainwell fans and family can assume pretty high hopes for what’s to come for this team. The team has already captured the district title and won the regional semifinals. The Plainwell varsity soccer team has found tons of success so far this season, and the players are excited for what the rest of the season holds for them.
