Crazy times have caused such a chaotic year and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon; sports have been greatly affected by this and it is making athletes, coaches, and parents’ lives extremely frustrating.

Winter sports were supposed to get going back in mid-November, but athletes had to wait to get the chance to showcase their skills and get in front of college coaches. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer subsequently lightened up restrictions so contests began Monday, Feb. 8; this change is giving many high school seniors a chance to have a shot at taking their talents to the next level and enjoying their last year of high school eligibility.

At first, only a few sports were allowed to compete; the bowling team got off to a hot start with their first match against rival Otsego they were able to secure the win.

“The team bowled amazingly and we beat Otsego 23-7,” said Sullivan Miller ‘21.

The Kalamazoo Eagles had one week of practice in November before the several shutdowns have only allowed them to have eight practices since, and they’re holding onto hope that Governor Whitmer will lighten up restrictions.

The Plainwell boys basketball team had a few practices on the court but were at first unable to compete with other schools.

“It’s difficult because even if I wanted to pursue talks with coaches…we aren’t able to play games and get them film…” said Guard Connor Buischini ‘21 about his opportunity to get in front of college coaches.

Now, however, the schedule is picking up steam. In addition, girls basketball, boys swimming, and wrestling have also had contests.
