Donald Trump is an absolutely deplorable human being. He is a racist, a misogynist, a homophobe, and an islamophobe. He’s also one other thing: your next president.
Trump’s proposed policies that he claims will enact are going to have devastating effects on the nation. Most of Obama’s progress from the last 8 years is going to be undone within the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency.
First comes the repealing of Obamacare. College students and others all across the country will be left without coverage – an estimate states that 17 to 21 million fewer Americans will be covered. This will add tremendous amounts of stress to citizens as they will fear having any medical emergencies. The average cost to stay in a hospital for 3 days is $30,000, and without coverage they will not be able to afford the basic human right of healthcare?
“Trump won’t be able to do what he wants because congress will stop him, right?” said Levi Taylor ‘17.
Wrong. This is perhaps the scariest part: The majority of congress is republican, about 56%, so Trump will experience little resistance from them and will be able to enact many of his disastrous policies with relative ease.
Trump also plans to appoint ultra-conservative justices to the Supreme Court. He already has to fill the empty seat that Justice Scalia left when he died. Trump has a short-list of 21 or so candidates, according to him. These justices will attempt to repeal the ruling which deemed gay-marriage legal nationwide.
“They will interpret the constitution the way the Founders wanted it interpreted, and I believe that’s very important,” said Trump.
The Founding Fathers also condoned slavery Mr. Trump.
The justices Trump will appoint will also work to defend the Citizens United ruling: a disastrous ruling which allows billionaires to pour millions into elections, essentially rigging them. It is a clear violation of the principles of democracy. Everyone is supposed to have equal say, but instead billionaires have a greater say.
Speaking of billionaires, Trump plans to cut taxes on the ultra-rich. Any given millionaire can expect to see a $317,000. This is ridiculous because billionaires already have more money than what they know to do with. Taxing the 1% even more should be the way we go about raising funds for the government.
In these next 4 years we can expect to see catastrophic effects on civil rights, the state of the middle class, and on the Supreme Court.
The core of conservatism is built on the idea of regression, not progression. Regression is not what the country needs; what we need more than ever now is progression.
In the past 8 years, we’ve seen great advances in civil rights. I truly do fear that these advances are all going to be undone under the presidency of Donald Trump.
