Open campus needs to be allowed again. There are many benefits to having open campus. Open campus provides improvement in students and in the school.
With having open campus, it will cut jobs in the lunchroom, they wouldn’t need as many lunch ladies. They still will need some lunch ladies or they can find other areas in the school that they’re willing to work in. Many underclassmen can’t drive so they can ask an upperclassman to take them. The school has more money to spend on other areas of the school. The school could use the money for new chairs, heat or a/c, and fix the lights.
“The lights could be fixed and air conditioning would run better, or whatever the school needs or might need,” said Thea Sampsel ‘18.
Open campus provides trust in students. Teachers will trust students returning on time. Students have to time manage and watch their time closely. Many students learn responsibilities by not having someone guiding them every step of the way.
Students will learn leadership for their actions if they were late coming back. In college, you won’t have teachers forcing you to come back on time. In high school, you have more responsibilities.
“Many responsibilities will be shown but the main one is returning to the school on time during lunch,” said Reece Parsons ‘18.
Being responsible relates to being able to choose healthy foods. The school lunches aren’t always the healthiest. You would be able to go home or out to lunch to find a healthier food choice. If you forgot to pack your lunch or forgot something, it will give you an opportunity to go home and get it.
“Not all students are able to eat food from the lunch room. If you have your license you should be allowed to drive a get some lunch,” said Brooke Pinks ‘16.
The majority of students would find a friend or drive to get food. Being able to choose your type of food or restaurant choice can help the local economy. The number in customers would increase each day which will help the business trive.
“More students would be going out and they would be spending their money in local businesses or restaurants,” said Isaac Davis ‘19.
The ability to go out and hang out with your friends gives you a break where you can be yourself. In school, you try to fit in when you don’t have friends around. At lunch, you’ll be able to hang out and relax. You’re able to hang out with friends and having a little break from school.
“ It gives you time to relax and unwind so you don’t go to all of your classes super stressed,” said Carly Colyer ‘18.
Open campus needs to be brought back. It provides benefits for students and the school. There will always be a concern on safety and being back on time. There’s always a risk of danger even when we’re driving to school and not arriving on time. It’s the student’s responsibility to time manage and drive safe. Open campus provides the students will be able to get a little break from school and come back refreshed.
