The old saying is “the third time’s the charm”, but Plainwell High School administrators trying to make the saying the “second time’s the charm.”
Extra Time Today commonly known as “ETT” is one of Plainwell High School’s student assistance programs. Originally, students, namely freshmen, who did not complete their homework during class had to stay after school for an hour to do make-up work.
Physical education teacher, Doug White was one of the supervisors for the ETT program last year. White describes ETT as this “ It is not negative. It is a positive intervention to help students and allows them time to complete a task.”
The new rule is that any freshmen or sophomores who are failing two or more classes must stay after for two weeks to help fix their grades.
The new rule was made at a meeting to improve the old ETT program among other issues. The people at the meeting were Principal Jeremy Wright,Vice principal Debra Burley, graduation and retention specialist Nick Marshall, and former PHS teacher Craig Archer.
“I like it. People who forget or are too busy and have good grades are not penalized” commented Marshall.
“ The new rule is positive and to help students, not to enforce it on students who are on time,” says White.
Students have mixed feelings about the new rule.
“ I wish students only have to stay a week and a half or a week instead of two weeks. You have to stay after five days a week, for an hour a day. Thats five extra hours, most people don’t even want to stay for the full seven hours we are here for anyway.” says Alec Vandentoorn ‘16
“It’s better than the old one,” says Gary Selner ‘16.
“It is more lenient. It is better than last year,” says Nathan Andres ‘16.
ETT starts on Monday Sept 16, 2:30-3:41. Students who have to go to ETT will be notified.
