Summer is about relaxing and not having to worry about school and
homework. Students wait all year for their break but somehow those few months fly by and the counting down begins once again so what is it that these students do when they finally get that summer break?
Going on vacation seems to be the activity many of the students of Plainwell High School decided to do this summer. Megan Childress`16 went on a family vacation with her sister Haley`14 and parents to Cancun, Mexico. Even with the drug cartel problems in Mexico, Childress felt completely safe where she was.
“Just because there are bad things happening doesn’t mean it will happen to you”. When they arrived at their destination after the three and a half hour flight from Chicago they were taken to their resort.
“Once you get to the resort you are completely shut out from what is going outside of the resort walls.” Childress also added that if what was going on there wasn’t on the news all the time she would not have even really known.
The Childress family stayed in an all inclusive resort for a week. As an all inclusive resort once Childress arrived there was nothing to pay for because drinks, food and mostly anything else you could think of was already paid for through the room.
Every morning Childress would wake up and eat and spend every day lying on the beach with her older sister Haley `14 and spending the nights going to dinner and relaxing with the rest of her family.
“I loved Mexico and it was a great way to start off a great summer”.
Not everyone has the ability to go to a different country for their summer vacation. Some dedicated their summer to going to every 7-on-7 football scrimmage and every practice like Aaron Klang`15.
“I want to be ready for this years season and needed to learn the Plainwell defense.” Klang`15 transferred from Gull Lake to Plainwell in the middle of last school year and now is one of the newest members to the varsity football team.
Sara White`17 and Kelsey Phillips`14 both spent time at Cedar Point. Phillips`14 also she went to B-93 Birthday Bash and Faster Horses Festival and jammed to that good ‘ole country music.
Julia Majdan`16 spent time in Colorado visiting her uncle, who is a member of the United States Army, shooting guns, hiking, and whitewater rafting.
“Whitewater rafting is a such a thrill,” she said. Majdan’16 believes that everyone should experience whitewater rafting at some point in their life.
Others such as Greyson Steele `14 and Catie Brown`14 spent time at their jobs, Brown`14 works at the “best sports bar in town” if you ask her, which happens to be Joe’s Pizza and Sports Bar in downtown Plainwell. Steele`14 who worked at Kalamazoo Speedway added how he spent most days with his friends even when he did work late.
