Time for change! This is what many faculty members and parents think when it comes to the grading scales of students here at Plainwell. Yet some show great opposition to the idea.
Plainwell has been considering this proposal for a while. The staff has shown their agreement with the idea. Also many parents showed their approval of the grading scale at a couple of parent meetings.
Some of the benefits of the grading scale include more thorough examination of student’s grades, many colleges, universities and technical schools use it and it will align Plainwell with most of Wolverine Conference schools.
“The change of GPA will allow us to provide our top students with a more consistent approach with how colleges and universities grade and evaluate prospective students” said Principal Jeremy Wright in his online letter. These are the reasons why so many are in favor of the change.
Grading has not changed much for teachers, only for the students.
”In terms of grading it is basically the same” said teacher Samantha Newell. This is because teachers have always graded with pluses and minuses and only a students overall GPA has not been affected by a plus or minus.
Most are in agreement with the change but there are some students that are still on the fence about the GPA change and some have clearly took a side.
“It is harder to get a good grade” said Matt Sutton ‘14 . Many agree with him and think that the change is just to align Plainwell with the other Wolverine Conference schools.
“ The historical grade point averages will stay the same, but starting this year all four classes will be incorporated into the new grading scale” said Paige Mulka. As for freshmen they may take a stronger stand against the grading scale since their whole high school career will be affected. Unlike seniors who will only have their last year affected.
Whether you like it or not, you do not have a choice. The new grading scale has gone into effect for this year.
